May 27, Sarah rated it it was amazing Shelves: It is the only map in existence that shows most of Manhattan’s original topography though without a way to translate the scale used before the major excavations of the nineteenth citj flattened it.
A little too much on flora and fauna for me but that’s the author’s mandate for such a project. I also found the speculations about the future of Manhattan intriguing. Sanderson is a senior conservation ecologist in the Global Conservation Programs of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Certainly, this “back-to-nature” view of the future runs counter to the recent historical trend of suburban sprawl expanding ever outward. I called the library to make sure the book had not been stolen and was nrw it was not.
Rather than a “Life after People” that imagines a world without people as a state histkry might want to return to, Sanderson thinks about how we might make Manhattan bett I loved this book.

Mar ot, Stephanie rated it really liked it Shelves: He estimates that the island was occupied by humans for about 10, years before Hudson, but they had a much lighter footprint that the current inhabitants. This is an unusual and magical book, which I recommend highly for many of the reasons others cite. I give 5 stars for the 10 years of painstaking research, the amazing digitalized images of NYC as it would have looked the day Henry Hudson arrived years ago, the old maps, botanical prints, inspiration and message.
Beautifully presented and written. The book includes appendices of natural features of the island and the flora and fauna that were likely to exist in Manhattan.
Just so you know, this is a heavy book; it’s printed on thick, almost hard-stock paper.

Mannahatta is a very well written and illustrated book, with many fantastic maps. This book lets me do that with manhattan, but now Citu don’t have to squint.
