At the age of three, after his father’s death, Saroyan was placed in the orphanage in Oakland, California, together with his brother and sister, an experience he later described in his writing. To me, “inspirational” fiction reads more like “starry-eyed, sappy, and completely phony” fiction in most novels and even in “inspirational” nonfictionbut not in this instance.
In fact, I stopped the film because I was enjoying it, and wanted to read the book first. It felt disjointed and out-of-date. It was an odd book, but I did finish it. The family is the Macauley’s—a mother, sister, and three brothers whose struggles and dreams reflect those of America’s second-generation immigrants.
Home is where the Heart is Set in California’s rural wine country in the mid ‘s this novel introduces readers to the Macauley family of fictitious Ithaca. The middle son takes a job as a telegraph messenger, and learns about life and loss.
This book has a bit of history and a bunch of lessons on how to be a good human being even if it says comedy in the title. Della vita, ecco, ti piace la vita? The problem is the book is terribly dated, and not in a good way. Jessica rated it it was ok Feb 20, Many times the telegraph box rattled and Mr. I ran across this author as part of the Best Short Stories of the Century anthology and recommend him as a This book was written during WW2 and there are plenty of Rockwell-esque moments here–boys running around a small town with colorfully-nicknnamed chums, creaky old guy running the local telegraph station, women with big hair attending their monthly social gathering.
Saroyan decided to become a writer after his mother showed him some of his father’s writings. I would recommend this book; it’s a classic I have read several times.

Does the book stand the test of time?
The story is mostly based on Ullysses viewpoint, and shows what happens to him. I wouldn’t normally pick this type of book up, but I went to a book club last month and this was the book to read.
It makes you think about peace, kindness, your family and its unbreakable unison throughout the difficulties. His father is dead and his older brother, Marcus, is fighting in the war.
