Jokester by Isaac Asimov. The characters of the story conjecture that figuring this fact out makes it useless as a tool, so the aliens will turn off humour. This is one of my very favourite stories by Asimov.

Most of Asimov’s popularized science books explain scientific concepts in a historical way, going as far back as possible to a time when the science in question was at its simplest stage.
