I’d of swore it was Mrs. He called Julie up on a jaircut when he knew Doc was over in Carterville. He looked kind of nervous. Ultimately, though the barber doesn’t understand it, Jim pays for his practical jokes and a very dear price at that.

He was goin’ to do something,’ but it took a lot of figurin.

Henry Prize Stories 2 O. He let fire and Jim sunk back in the boat, dead.

That the barber continues to see such deep anger and haircit as Kendall’s peculiar and absorbing lardher of humor characterizes the barber as well. The story makes small towns seem haircutt they have bad people in them, when that is not true at all.

Stylistically irritating; not terribly original. He was, when he worked, a travelling salesman for a canning factory whose hobby was to note the names and addresses as he rode the train through other small towns; he would then write postcards to these strangers, signed “A Friend,” with messages like “Ask your Missus who kept her from gettin’ lonesome the last time you were in Carterville” or “Ask your wife about that book agent that spent the afternoon last week,” relishing such mean tricks without bothering to know the outcome of them.

I happened to know that Hod had went over to Carterville and wouldn’t be home till the end of the week. Thoughts on reading and studying the short story by a guy who’s read and written about a lot of short stories. Jim didn’t work very steady after he lost his position with the Carterville people.

His wife didn’t have a dime with her, or nowhere else, I guess.

Apr 06, Jack K rated it it was amazing. Chances is that Joe Barnes told his wife and she told somebody else’s wife and they told their husband. It’s a cinch Doc went up in the air and swore he’d make Jim suffer.

So they had to choose another man to be coroner in his place and they picked Doc Stair. Kendall was stubborn and wouldn’t tell him, but the kids told him and he insisted on takin’ them and their mother in the show. Well, he’s got an Adam’s apple that looks more like a mush-melon.

This place is jampacked Saturdays, from four o’clock on. Well, he waited till Evans’s Circus was advertised to come to town. Reminds me of when I went to the barber shop when I was a kid and it was the gathering place of the small town.

You’re a newcomer, ain’t you? And fuck, what a goddamn tool Jim is. Not as good, though, since Jim Kendall got killed. Only poor Paul ain’t crazy, but just silly. Two days later, while at the barbershop, Jim wanted to go duck hunting but his friend and often partner in his jokes at the barber shopHod Meyers, was out of town.

Nobody could of thought it up but Jim Kendall.

The thing that made me give this 5 stars was def. Well, Jim would set there a w’ile without opening his mouth only to spit, and then finally he’d say to me, “Whitey,”–my right name, that is, my right first name, is Dick, but everybody round here calls me Whitey–Jim would say, “Whitey, your nose looks like a rosebud tonight. Yet the appeal to the reader is a double one: Set in a barber shop in a rural Michigan town, Whitey the town barber, who narrates the entire story in first-person monologue tells an unnamed customer who Whitey notes is “a newcomer” a story about Jim Kendall, a local resident who was recently killed.

He got full of gin and laid round Wright’s poolroom all day.
